USM offers courses ranging from Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences to Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education. These are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 32,000 students at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in the island of Penang; 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal (approximately 50km from the main campus); and 3 at the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus). USM also has 17 dedicated research centres for a wide range of specialisations which include archaeology, medicine and dentistry, molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, and policy research and international studies. It also provides consultancy, testing, and advisory services to the industry under the ambit of USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, the University’s commercial arm. Since the beginning, USM has adopted the School system rather than the traditional Faculty system to ensure that its students are multi-disciplined from their exposure to other areas of study by other Schools. It also encourages students to be active in extra-curricular activities given the myriad of clubs and societies available. As a Research Intensive University recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) in 2007, USM offers educational and research opportunities to students and staff. In 2008, USM also became the first university in the country to be selected by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status.

"USM has an epic scenery with lush gardens and many natural settings in trees, animals, ponds and well crafted course offerings. Situated in the island city of Penang was a lure to me when I studies in USM. The students of the university greatly benefits from the vast array of industries located in Penang. Thus, students have access to many entrepreneurial opportunities in companies located in Penang for internship and building of on job experience. Also a world heritage site, the city offers tourist attractions to many international students that can visit numerous places. IMCC has designed various support systems to make students stay in USM very memorable most especially with the internationalization programs.
Kami Memenpin (Did I get the last word correct?) That should be the USM moto - WE LEAD 😉"
Karthik Krishna Kumar, India
Master of Business Administration, Graduate School of Business
Ola!! I am a proud alumnus of USM, from India. I finished my master’s in Business Administration, from Graduate School of Business in 2022. In these two years of learning, I experienced a lot of personal growth as well. I would like to extend my gratitude to IMCC, USM for making us all feel inclusive. IMCC was like family, especially when they recruited me as the International Students’ Coordinator for a one-year tenure. The trust and belief the director, Mr. Aizat Hisham Ahmad instilled in me, was unmatched. I am surely going to carry this inimitable exposure I received throughout my stay at USM!
Dipraj Debnath , Bangladesh
MSc Aerospace Engineering, School of Aerospace Engineering
Hello guys! I was a student of USM, where I did my master’s in Aerospace Engineering. Although I was living in the Engineering campus, once I joined USMi student’s society, I was instantly a part of the close-knit IMCC family. I was immediately involved in various events organized by IMCC and USMi and the experience was unparallel. During my study, I did not just make friends from my campus, but I was also acquainted with many at the main campus, thanks to IMCC. This kind of involvement gave me one-of-a-kind experience, that you would never feel anywhere else! Thank you IMCC, for this exceptional time.
