USM offers courses ranging from Natural Sciences, Applied Sciences, Medical and Health Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences to Building Science and Technology, Social Sciences, Humanities, and Education. These are available at undergraduate and postgraduate levels to approximately 32,000 students at its 17 Academic Schools on the main campus in the island of Penang; 6 Schools at the Engineering Campus in Nibong Tebal (approximately 50km from the main campus); and 3 at the Health Campus in Kubang Kerian, Kelantan (approximately 300km from the main campus). USM also has 17 dedicated research centres for a wide range of specialisations which include archaeology, medicine and dentistry, molecular medicine, science and technology, Islamic development and management studies, and policy research and international studies. It also provides consultancy, testing, and advisory services to the industry under the ambit of USAINS Holdings Sdn Bhd, the University’s commercial arm. Since the beginning, USM has adopted the School system rather than the traditional Faculty system to ensure that its students are multi-disciplined from their exposure to other areas of study by other Schools. It also encourages students to be active in extra-curricular activities given the myriad of clubs and societies available. As a Research Intensive University recognised by the Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (MOHE) in 2007, USM offers educational and research opportunities to students and staff. In 2008, USM also became the first university in the country to be selected by the Malaysian government to participate in the Accelerated Programme for Excellence (APEX), a fast-track programme that helps tertiary institutions achieve world-class status.
What our undergradaute Alumni say?
Shahd Abdelhamid, Egypt
BA English Literature and Language Studies, School of Humanities
"I am forever grateful that I took the decision to study in USM. The people, the places, the faces, and the experiences I’ve gone through are life-changing in the best ways. I enjoyed studying my course, I’m blessed to have met the people I met, and I am certain there is more for me to experience. There is time for you and time for me, and time for a plenty other good decisions. Not one paragraph, not ten could do justice to how awesome my experience in USM has been. All I can tell you is: if you are here, you are in a good place. Adios!"
Umrana Maheer, Bangladesh
Bachelor of technology (Environment), School of Industrial technology
"Joining USM as an undergraduate student was a meaningful and wonderful experience for me. I graduated from the School of Industrial Technology (Environment), and I believe that I can share the interdisciplinary knowledge that I have gained from this course to spread environmental awareness and make significant positive changes. I am positive that, the experience and skills I have developed at USM would be useful for my future career. Furthermore, I was able to make meaningful connections with friends from different countries and backgrounds and learn numerous things through sharing our knowledge and opinions."
Fatima Ahmed Bashath, Yemen
BSc Pharmacy, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
"Hello! I’m Fatima and I just graduated from the school of pharmaceutical science. As someone who always wanted to have the experience of studying and living abroad, when the opportunity of joining USM was presented to me, it was an offer I could not pass upon. USM is a very welcoming place and from the first day, I felt at home here. In these four years I discovered new cultures, explored new places, and met many new friends with different backgrounds. Sadly, my journey has come to an end, and I still feel like there is so much more to experience!"
